X-Ray Diffraction

 X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD) is a versatile technique that can be used to identify any crystalline substances, such as most minerals. It can also be used to quantify the proportions of different minerals or indeed many other substances when they are present in a mixture. All of our routine XRPD methods, including our quantitative methods, are UKAS accredited. This means they have been thoroughly verified, audited and checked to ensure they are robust analytical methods that give reliable results.

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Electron Microscopy is an extremely versatile tool which allows the study of both morphology and material composition from virtually all areas of science and technology. The EM section has a Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Mircroscope (FEGSEM) fitted with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS) for elemental analysis. High resolution Secondary Electron Imaging, Backscattered Electron Imaging, X-Ray microanalysis and X-Ray mapping are all possible. In addition, the SEM is equipped with a cryogenic stage allowing for the preservation of fluid phases in the samples, and analysis in situ if necessary. A polarizing optical microscope fitted with a digital camera is also available for the analysis of thin sections of soil or rock.

Inorganic and Soil Analysis

Inorganic and Soil Analysis

Elemental analysis is carried out by Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emisson Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS) for samples with element concentrations ranging from percentages to ppt. A dedicated low level mercury analyser is used for ultra-low level mercury analysis. These techniques readily analyse samples that are in solution such as waters, chemicals and extracts. Solid samples such as soils are acid digested for elemental composition, or extracted in a variety of other means for nutrients and exchangeable cations.

Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR): an effective tool for the analysis of problem samples

FTIR Spectroscopy is a versatile analytical technique capable of providing a chemical fingerprint for a wide range of inorganic and organic samples.  

FTIR Spectroscopy can identify, characterise and qualify a large variety of samples from biological to clay minerals. 

It excels at tackling ‘problem samples’, identifying unknowns or confirming identification based on a reference material.

James Hutton Limited has a dedicated lipid laboratory, Mylnefield Lipid Analysis, which has more than 20 years' experience of analysing oils and fats. 

We are one of the few laboratories in the world that has FDA (GMP) and MHRA (GMP and GCP) approval. We are fully accredited to ISO9001:2008 standards and regularly participate in international ring testing.

In addition we have expertise in the extraction of lipids from complex matrices, stability testing and the analysis of omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids and other complex lipids.

James Hutton Limited can provide analysis of a wide range of stable isotopes from Hydrogen to Lead, performing both bulk and compound specific analysis of light isotopes including, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen and Hydroge, and heavy isotopes including Strontium, Neodymium, Samarium and Lead.
